Weddings held at home are some of my favorites. Seeing the pictures from a day where the bride and groom are surrounded by friends and family in a space that has held their memories and love through the years. Jessica and Evan were married on her parents’ property in Oregon, and the families were very involved in erecting buildings for the reception as well as the platform for the ceremony. The buildings were draped with flowing fabric, and native plants were added to the already gorgeous space to enhance the day.

Renee and Evan, the couple from this wedding, designed every aspect of their wedding. This included the decor, flowers, and cake. Renee even spent time before the ceremony arranging every guest’s table setting! One of the perks of planning your wedding and being involved in all the DIY details is getting to design the experience that your guests have.

Another yellow wedding for your Monday, but this time the yellow has been paired with a gorgeous gray, which is a great neutral for a bright color palette. Courtney and Nathan did a wonderful job of maximizing these colors to their advantage. In the words of their photographer, “Mason jars, candles, vintage luggage, vintage luggage tags, lemons, a home from the 1800′s, Tom’s shoes… This wedding was spectacular. The couple is very creative and put their personal touch on everything. The purchased items were done by Etsy designers and the rest was all DIY by the bride and groom.”

Oh, yellow weddings. They’re so full of bright, punchy color and all the shades can really add to the details of the day. Our first Monday wedding took place in Hudson, New York, and is full of sunny, handmade touches (as well as a pair of rather adorable garden gnomes). Mandy and Jamie were married at the Mount Merino Manor, and the yellow was infused in everything from the bride’s shoes to the bouquets, the cake, and the lemons used in the décor.

On my first official day as the Real Weddings intern, I wanted to showcase a beautiful wedding from my home state of Oregon. In the words of photographer Sara Gray, “Brooke and Galen decided to do things a little differently – they went to a covered bridge they loved in college and exchanged vows in front of family and friends at this simple elopement ceremony.”

The bride and groom were married in front of the Goodpasture Bridge in Eugene. It is one of the longest covered bridges in Oregon, as well as one of the oldest at 73 years old. After the vows, they toasted their new marriage with their party of eight. What I adore about this wedding is the love that jumps off the page. This wedding feels so organic, rich, and full of happiness. Which is what weddings are all about. Enjoy.

Oh, friends, I am so excited to share this resource with you! Spoonflower is one of the coolest, most innovative services to hit the crafting world in a long, long time.

So, what exactly do they do? They print custom fabric designed by you. Yep, that’s right, you can create your own fabric for a mere $18 a yard with no minimums. Just imagine what you can do with this: ring pillows, table runners, handbags for your maids, chair covers, neck ties, vests, photo booth backdrops, invitations (shameless plug: see The DIY Bride book for the Couture Silk Invite) … the list goes on and on.

Spoonflower has just come out of their beta phase and is now open to everyone. Sign-up is free and they have a number of online resources for inspiration and to help get you started.

The April issue of Crafts ‘n Things magazine is on the shelves and there’s a project from my book in it! Check out page 28 for Crystal Drop Cake Jewelry and a short & sweet review of the book. There are other cool wedding projects inside from different contributors.

I’ve seen the magazine at large book sellers and I found this issue in my local grocery store today.

Ann’s Guest Book

The utterly wonderful Ann, a DIY Bride, has graciously shared her lovely DIY guest book project with us. Originally inspired by a Martha project, Ann has developed a simplified version that costs about $8.00 to make.

Take a blank sketch book, hard-bound. Make sure you “crack the spine” of the book by opening it all the way and bending the spine back a little so it will sit open nicely on a guest book table.
I glued a place-marker ribbon onto the spine that can be moved throughout the sketchbook.
Glue on thin felt batting. When you glue, cut out rectangles in the middle that will sit where the spine is. Be strategic with the glue only adding a line to the spine, then the inside covers, stretching the material. This will insure the book can open unrestricted.
When gluing the inside covers, pull the long end first so it is taught and can close. Then I mitered the fabric corners to keep from too much fabric building up which would restrict the closing of the book.
I used the same process to glue down the seersucker on top of the batting
I glued the wider ribbon to tie the book shut.
Using scrapbook craft paper or wrapping paper, I cut rectangles to hide the glued fabric on the inside cover. I just glued that into place and the total project took me about 25 minutes!
