The Wedding Library, along in part with Martha Stewart, is hosting the “must attend” wedding event of early 2008 at the Carlyle on January 26. I can’t get to NYC this month (drat!) but if you can, you’ll be dazzled by the likes of DIY Bride favorites Darcy Miller from Martha Stewart Weddings, Preston Bailey, and Reem Acra. There will also be a champagne breakfast and vendor showcase with some of the best in the industry.  Tickets are available at http://www.theweddinglibrary.tix.com.

I’ll be showcasing 4 fab projects from the book on Bay Area Today (NBC11 - San Jose) sometime between 11 a.m. and 12 pm today, Wednesday 1/9.

(I’m totally freaking out about it right now. Wish me luck!)

Hey DIYers!

I get a lot of “where can I buy…?” questions and I thought it’d be a great idea to put together a list of local crafty resources throughout the US. I’d love to get your input because, well, you know your city much better than I do!

What I’m looking for are stores, online shops, and classes where DIYers can buy supplies for making projects or to take lessons on how to make stuff (like learning Gocco or sewing classes for example).   Independently run, small businesses are most welcome as are small chains (like PaperSource).

What I’m NOT looking for are big box, mega stores (Wal-Mart, chain craft stores) and places that sell ready-made items. This is for supplies and classes only.

Have a fave place to buy crafty goodies? Let me know! Just send me an email through the contact form with:

  • The name of the store
  • Street address (include city & state, please)
  • Website (if they have one)

Categories I’m interested in:

  • Paper and cardstock
  • Flowers and floral supplies
  • Ribbon & embellishments
  • Fabric and sewing
  • Millinery supplies
  • Jewelry, rhinestones, beading supplies
  • General wedding / decor (like Jamali Gardens in NYC)
  • General crafting (rubber stamps, craft tools, etc.)
  • Fun places to take wedding related craft classes

I’m delighted to announce that Cassandra has won a copy of The DIY Bride: 40 Fun Projects For Your Ultimate One-of-a-Kind wedding!

Cassandra’s entry really struck a chord with me as she chronicled the heartbreak of when iron-on transfers go awry. (I know this frustration all too well!)

Thank you to everyone who entered the contest. I appreciate all of your stories and kind words. You’re all gems! If you’re bummed you didn’t win this time, don’t fret. There’s another contest coming soon.

Today is the last sneak peek of the book! I had a very hard time choosing what I wanted to share. I decided to show you one of my favorite features of the book - the price comparison. At the end of each project, I compare what it’d cost you to buy a ready-made/commercial version versus the cost to do-it-yourself. I think you’ll be very surprised at how much cash you can save. Check out some budget-friendly goodness after the jump.

Hey DIYers!

Thank you to everyone who entered the Win The DIY Bride Book contest. I received more entries than I anticipated so it’s taking a little longer than I had expected to get through them all. There are so many funny, poignant, and cool entries it’s become a really tough process. I’ll post the winner tomorrow, January 01.

And I just have to say that you guys rock!

Today’s sneak peak is among my all-time favorite DIY projects and it was one of the most fun to photograph. {Check out the Split Bamboo Centerpiece below.}
We shot this project, the Split Bamboo Centerpiece, at the ultra cool Metropolitan Building in Long Island City/Queens (if you’re looking for a reasonably priced venue in the NYC area, do check this place out!) and originally had another theme in mind for the display. When we got on location all of us - photographer, stylist, editorial team - fell in love with this really neat alcove in one of the Met’s rooms. The ginormous Buddha head, oriental rugs, and silk pillows were already in place so we took advance of the great setting. Hooray for spontanaeity!
