The 2010 Reader Poll Results

Earlier this year I hosted a quickie survey about you, our readership. Some of the results: Our DIY Brides …

  • Have beginner to intermediate craft skills
  • Will make 4 or more crafts for her wedding
  • Will spend between $500 – $1100 on their wedding crafts (Though approximately half of you do not have a budget for your crafts AT ALL. Seriously, we need to have a chat about this.)
  • Will hire 3 or more vendors for your big day
  • 40% have a wedding budget under $15,000
  • 32% have a budget between $15,000 – $25,000 (The average US wedding budget this year is hovering around the $20,000 mark.)
  • 28% have a budget over $25,000

Most of the data is pretty much in line with what I expected. The thing that surprised me the most was the change in budget demographics. In surveys past the average DIYBride reader was very much in the mid-range budget area. This year has seen a migration from mid-range to both smaller and more luxe budgets. It’s a fairly spread among all budget demographics now. That’s a very exciting prospect but also hugely challenging in planning out projects. To everyone who participated: thank you! Your input is valuable and tremendously appreciated.

Weekend Diversions

Happy Weekend!

I’m quoted in a Forbes Magazine website article this week. Please read With This Click, I Thee Wed, their take on how couples are using the internet to plan weddings.

For fans of the DIY Bride books: good news! I recently signed on to do a 3rd one and am blogging about the experience in my Behind The Scenes blog. If you’ve ever wondered what goes into writing a craft book, come join me as I chronicle my journey from concept to finished product. I also write about the business of being a blogger, work-life “balance”, and other business-y stuff as time allows.

And, speaking of the books, I have a DIY Bride book giveaway coming up next week.

Hoping your weekend is a great one,

Khris

Industry Buzz: Wedding Apparel

The internets and social medias are abuzz with recent news about: Swoon-worthy Anthropologie is releasing a bridal line in Spring 2011. Well, not Anthropologie itself but its parent company, Urban Outfitters, Inc. The new bridal will be its own brand but it’s said to be developed the design team behind Anthropologie and will have a similar aesthetic. Bridal gowns will retail in the $$750 to $5,000 range and there will be bridesmaids dress (starting at $200), jewelry, shoes, invitations, and decorations. Vera Wang has partnered with David’s Bridal to produce a line of gowns. Slated for a Spring 2011 release, the new line  will debut with 20 gowns priced from $600-$1500. Size range is reported 0 – 30. White House Black Market is jumping into the bridal biz, too. They’ve released a new limited-edition collection with a lovely ivory satin gown with a fitted bodice and asymmetrical skirt that rings up at just $498. Shoes and accessories are also available. Another favorite in the house of DIY Bride, Cynthia Rowley, has teamed up with Dessy to create a line of bridesmaid dresses. Inspired by her ready-to-wear line, Rowley’s 20-piece bridesmaid collection will debut in bridal salons this June. Prices $175-$220. High-end retailer, Net-A-Porter, expanded with an online bridal boutique. If you’re in the market for luxury gowns and accessories, this is the spot to find unique and hard-to-obtain items. While it’s not a bargain hot spot there are some splurge-worthy gowns and accessories that are reasonably priced. DIY Bride would like to mention that she’s available for gown and accessory design work…

CHA: Live Blogging & Twittering

Hey DIYers,

Tomorrow I’ll be heading to CHA, the Craft & Hobby Association’s big trade show for the craft industry that’s held on Sunday and Monday. CHA is where hundreds of craft companies of all kinds showcase their new products to retailers & media in the craft industry. While I’m there I’ll be blogging and twittering about the cool wedding craft-related products I find.

If you’re not yet following me on Twitter, you can find me at http://www.twitter.com/diybride . For my CHA-related posts, search for the hashtag #diycha and that’ll bring up my CHA-only posts. (In the twitter search field, just type in #diycha.)

I’ll likely blog once or twice while I’m there. I’m not yet sure what the wifi situation is at the venue or my hotel.  Check back here for updates.

If you’re attending the trade show, I’ll be signing copies of my new book, The Crafty Countdown, on Sunday 11/24 from 11 am – 12 pm in the R & M West Coast booth (#4212) at the Craft & Hobby Association Winter Trade Show. Please stop by and say hello!

Sneak Peek: The Crafty Countdown

It’s been about 5 months since I finished the manuscript for my 2nd book, The Crafty Countdown, which is due to be released on 22 December of this year. (It takes about a full year from the time a manuscript is received for the book to hit the shelves.)

As the book has gone through editing and various stages of production, I’ve received little peeks here and there of the design and layout. This is going to be such an adorable book! My publishers, Taunton, have really outdone themselves. I’m super excited about it and wanted to share  a peek of the front cover artwork. Isn’t it cute?
