Downtime This Weekend

Heads up, DIYers!  DIY Bride will be offline this weekend while we migrate to a fancy-schmancy new site. Don’t fret, though. You can still get your wedding awesomeness fix via our Facebook page and at DIY Bride Daily, our new-ish tumblr digs, while we’re doing the transition thing.

(Pssst! There’s a chance to win all 3 DIY Bride books coming up this weekend. Look for details Saturday morning over at Facebook. Good luck!)

Submission Guidelines

We are delighted to receive submissions from you! DIY Bride is currently seeking submissions of the following for inclusion on the DIY Bride site or in an issue of our digital magazine.

  • Craft tutorials
  • Real DIY weddings
  • Real engagement sessions
  • Articles about wedding planning and crafting

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Craft Tutorials:

Some of our reader’s favorite projects include: invitations and stationery, bouquets and florals, jewelry, decor, favors, and cakes. Projects for weddings, showers, engagement parties, and rehearsal dinners are all welcome.

We prefer projects that are modern and on-trend with the current crop of brides and grooms. (No tulle-wrapped bottles of bubbles, for example.)

Supply lists that must be able to be fulfilled by most crafters (no wholesale-to-the-trade suppliers, for example)

Directions must be clear, concise, and easy-to-follow. Our audience is primarily at the intermediate to advanced level crafters however, we will accept projects at a beginner level as well.

Step-by-step photos must be submitted whenever possible, along with crafting tips and technique information if needed. Any variations to projects are also beneficial.

We’re open to all wedding-related crafts and would love to see techniques such as sewing, paper crafts, printmaking, floral arranging, jewelry making, and clay.

Use of current popular color schemes and themes should be considered when finalizing projects.

Real Weddings & Engagements:

In the body of an email as plain text (no Word, PDF or other formats are accepted)

  1. Your first names
  2. Wedding date (including year)
  3. Wedding location (include city, state, country, resort, etc.)
  4. What made your wedding creative
  5. What projects you DIY’ed
  6. Any other details that made your wedding special
  7. List of vendors and links to their sites, as applicable

Please attach: at least 25 pictures of your wedding (75 – 100 is ideal), as attachments to the email. (A zipped file is ok as are individual photos; pdf, word, or other formats are not.)

We need at least 1 good shot of the couple in landscape format, 600px wide.

For photographers and other vendors:

We are a two bright lights editorial partner. This is our preferred method of professional submissions because it’s so easy for all involved however, we also accept direct submissions.

25-100 pictures of the wedding (A zipped file is ok, pdf; word, or other formats are not.)
Your name and company name
Couple’s names
Wedding date (including year)
Wedding location (include city, state, country, resort, etc.)
What made your wedding creative
What projects were DIY’ed
What you loved about this wedding

Everyone:

  • Please make sure you have the rights to send in the images of choice. In most cases, the photographer owns the rights to the images she/he took at the wedding – the couple does not. Do ask your photog for permission before you send pro shots, please.
  • Do NOT send links to your photos. Send the actual photos in an email, please.
  • Do NOT send your submissions in any format other than text in the body of an email. NO PDF, MS Word or other file types will be accepted.
  • Please send images from your wedding(s) only. Do not submit shots from other peoples’ weddings or events (unless you are the photographer or otherwise have permission to do so).
  • We cannot guarantee that we’ll use every image or will feature every submission.
  • Please be patient! It does take a while for us to review submissions and schedule them for publication.
  • We do share our submissions with our DIYBride.com readers, our tumblr subscribers, our Facebook friends, our Twitter followers, and our Pinterest boards. What can we say? We love sharing how crafty and awesome our readers are!

They're Here! An Affair To Remember and BookAZine #2

Happy, happy, happy 2012! There’s nothing like kicking off a new year with a new DIY Bride book and magazine-like-book thingie called a book-a-zine!

atr They're Here! An Affair To Remember and BookAZine #2

My third book, An Affair To Remember, was released yesterday. Like the previous two books, it’s a general wedding crafts book, covering a wide range of projects (40 of them to be exact) from your engagement party through your reception.

Publisher’s Weekly (this is a Very Big Deal – for me, at least) gave it a really swell review:

Cochran (DIYBride.com) provides an idea trove that will inspire the nuptial process of the budget-conscious. Projects are mostly favors, invites, ring holders and a few of the unexpected, such as making your own wedding rings with precious metal clays. She holds the crafter’s hand through the process of producing cigar-box welcome packages, teacup centerpieces and paper parasols, with detailed lists of supplies and directions, tips and hints, and an itemized price breakdown – with a dollop of humor hot-glued on the side. Eight wedding themes are presented, with five projects for each, enhancing any occasion calling for extra flair and less expense. And, if fairy-tale flower girl costumes or chicken-wire seating holders aren’t your thing, inspiration can be mixed and matched. And of course, that critical element – an estimate of just how many bridesmaids, moms and aunts will be required for crafty assistance – completes this wicker basket of ideas that will enliven the celebration of marriage – or just any good party.

Hey DIYers,

We are accepting applications for 4 of our internship positions:: Wedding Crafts Intern, Real Weddings Intern, Fashion + Beauty Intern, and an upcoming Social Media Intern.

Interns are an integral part of our team, as they help us create original, entertaining, and useful content for our community.

What We Offer: Interns will gain hands-on experience in the behind-the-scenes operations of a thriving online community and blog, mentoring in the wedding, bloging, and crafts industries, and a chance to develop writing, internet, and digital media skills.

This is an off-site, UNPAID internship (college credit may be available depending on your school’s requirements). We do offer fun perks in addition to this learning experience and may have opportunities for ad revenue shares.

Internships run in 3-month intervals. We prefer candidates who can work Aug/Sept – December 2011.

Happy Almost 2011! With the upcoming changes to the site, DIY Bride will be launching a vendor directory. If you have a wedding or wedding-craft related business, we invite you to apply for a spot. The vendor directory listings are paid placements; however, we do offer a variety of options to fit most budgets. We love small, independent businesses! Changes Are Coming!

Happy Holidays, DIYers!

I know it’s been terribly quiet around here lately and I wanted to give you an update.

There is much work going on behind the scenes at DIY Bride! In the coming weeks there will be some fundamental changes in how DIYBride operates. Our goal is to put more resources in your hands and to grow our offerings to better help you create the wedding of your dreams.

The new emphasis of DIYBride.com is on a community-based learning environment where you’ll be able to take online classes, attend workshops and seminars, and better connect with other couples, crafters, and wedding professionals. Our first classes will be:

  • Invitations 101
  • Intro to Printmaking
  • Beaded  Jewelry

DIYBride’s blog is being revamped into more of an online magazine format so that we can present projects and planning information in the context of how they’d work in a real wedding. For example: instead of just giving you, say, a favor project, we’ll be presenting a whole theme around that favor idea. We’ll give you a collection of projects and advice with templates, how-to instructions, and other crafty wedding goodness each month that are related to a central theme or idea.

The downloads area will return. We’re adding a shop and classified ads area along with a vendor directory, video tutorials, and other nifty features to be announced soon.

This is the vision I’ve had of DIY Bride for many, many years now. My first real business plan for DIY in 2006 had many of the above elements but, for reasons too numerous to list, didn’t manifest until now. It’s exciting to see some of it finally coming to life and in ways that are much better than I had originally envisioned. The launch date is January 10.
Thanks for your continued support and patience while I continue chugging along with the coding and testing of the new site.
