L Letterpress Quality Issues

Posted by Khris in Crafter's Toolbox

Hey DIYers,

I’ve heard from 3 different DIY Bride readers over the last few days that the L Letterpress is having some quality issues with the plates. Apparently they’re cracking too easily.  Some stores are pulling the plates (Paper Source has been mentioned specifically). If your plate cracks, please contact the store where you bought the plates to get a replacement.

I hope Quickutz/Lifestyle Crafts issues a statement soon.

{Edit to add: Users at the QK forums (mother company of Lifestyle Crafts) are reporting problems, too.}

    I had a bit of stress fractures on my “L” plates but I figured it was cuz of my homemade press. To remidy this I used less packing (cardstock shims) and now they work great! I made a new (prettier with measuring grids) press and I made plase with my cricut and magnet sheets and you can see it here: http://thefrugalcrafter.wordpress.com/2009/11/24/letterpress-experiment-part-2/ thanks for your link the other day;)

    Just got mine today and had read all about the cracking problem.

    First run through and mine cracked right away (just around the edges).

    I bought it for my wedding invitations and have ordered custom plates from ellum which I’ve heard are much better quality.

    Other than the cracking…..this kit is awesome.

    Hi there,

    Does anyone know if you can use any type of plate with the L letterpress machine? For instance, could I order a customized plate from Boxcar press and use it with this letterpress machine?

    Thanks!

      Yes, you can order custom plates from Boxcar. Do let them know you’re using the plate in a L Letterpress, though. Harold from Boxcar has used the L Letterpress himself. He posted about it here: http://boxcarpress.com/us/blog/2009/11/24/l-letterpress-printing-techniques-from-boxcar-press/
