Tired or Trendy: Cupcakes
There has been some recent discussion among my wedding industry peers about serving cupcakes in lieu of a wedding cake. The consensus with planners and bakers is that they’re played out. But, you know, these guys see these things over and over and over all year long. I’m sure they’re sick of things before many of us even know they’re a trend.
What do you say? Are cupcakes in or out?

What does DIY Bride say? I’m in the “depends on the presentation” camp. I had cupcakes at my wedding in October 2000 and they were just becoming popular then. 9 years later I’m finding they’re pretty played out BUT every now and then someone finds a clever or new way to make them seem fresh and exciting again. And, really, I can’t begrudge anyone that serves cupcakes. They rock!

As with any cake trend – square, oval, floral, uneven – it depends on how it’s presented. I think cupcakes are now more of a format than a trend.
it’s hard to vote because it doesn’t seem like they need to be in or out, any more than regular cake. I doubt anyone would suggest that having a wedding cake is out of style! So if you’d rather have cupcakes either because you like them better or because they’re more affordable, I say they are never out of style.
but if you’re doing cupcakes because it’s “IN” – I say “out, out, out”
i don’t think they are either tired or trendy, some people (myself included) choose one or the other based on cake serving fees, which may be waived if you serve cupcakes.
i think they’re definitely “played out” if you eat sleep and breathe wedding industry. if you’re a bride or a guest, not so much. i haven’t been to a single wedding with cupcakes and my wedding will have them… so far i have yet to hear from a guest that they’ve ever had them at another wedding
I agree that maybe in the industry they could be played out, but how many weddings does the average person see per year? I don’t really think there should be an “in” and “out” in weddings, since the timing’s not always up to us – just because I didn’t get engaged until late last year means I can’t have cupcakes at my wedding? I don’t think so!
Okay seriously – how are cupcakes more played out than the years and years and years of wedding cakes???
I don’t care if someone else thinks they are played out or not – I’m having cupcakes!
I think that people who breath weddings year-round may have a little bit of a bias. I just went to my first cupcake wedding on Saturday, so to me they aren’t played out!
I don’t think “played out” or not is really relevant. Every person has to decide what works best for them. We’re having an informal reception at my parents’ house, where trying to serve a massive cake would be hellish. Plus, we wanted to have several flavors of cake that don’t really go together. My friend is having a huge, elegant wedding with lots of serving staff to deal with the cake. I just think it’s cool that people are becoming more accepting of wedding desserts that are not A Huge White Cake that doesn’t even taste good. If a guest is coming to my wedding thinking, “Oh, God, she has cupcakes. How SO 5 years ago!” I’m pretty sure I don’t want them at my wedding.
Since I love cupcakes, and no matter what anyone says I will be having them at my wedding – what are some of the better ways to display/utilize them? Especially those that said “depends on the presentation”: what kind of presentation would make you say “Aww, cupcakes!” instead of “oh…cupcakes”?
Out but I still love them! Infinitely better than a wedding cake. Hmm maybe they are not a trend anymore just the norm??
I’ve been to many weddings and I’ve never been to one with cupcakes. I think they’re still a great option and definitely not over-done. Who can resist a cupcake? They’re the best!
I must say I’m confused by the question? why or how would cupcakes be any more “played out” than a cake? Aren’t they just another dessert option? I’ve also seen wedding pies! But, aren’t cupcakes always awesome? I didn’t know that desserts were subject to trends.
hooray for cupcakes!
i’m making vegan cupcakes with my sister for my wedding in may!(but not telling my guests they are vegan ) this way we can have a few different kinds….would be harder to make a few different kind of wedding cakes! i’m doing a pirate themed wedding so this way we can have piratey/tropical flavoured(rum, coffee, pineapple, coconut etc etc) cupcakes ..much easier then a big ole cake.
=)
If you love cupcakes, it doesn’t matter if they are ‘in’ or ‘out’ – have them at your wedding. Cupcakes are ALWAYS hip in my books.
I love seeing cupcakes at the wedding reception. In fact, I’ll immediately drop all my gear to run over to see them! I’m always amazed to such creativity and detail! I think having both a cake and cupcakes are the best. And of course, the kids truly love them!!
Best,

I’m doing cupcakes because of several factors, the most notable being that a wonderful, dear friend who is uber-talented has offered to make them as her wedding gift to us! We also like how we can offer little boxes, perhaps, and BINGO! wedding favor for those who want their cupcake (and can eat them too). Finally, well, they’re just darn cute. Come on! Who doesn’t like a great cupcake!
(For what it’s worth, I’ve never been to a wedding with cupcakes, so I don’t think they are out of style.)
