Heads Up: Postal Rate Increase

Published by DIY Bride under Industry News

The USPS is increasing postage rates effective May 14, 2007. (Not 2008 as I had earlier typed.) If you have invites or STDs that need to go out before the change, get thee to a post office straight away.

1st Class mail will increase to $0.41 for the first ounce. In an odd move by the USPS, the price for each additional ounce is actually deceasing. Each overage will cost just 17 cents, down from the current 24 cents. That’s good news for those of you sending pocketfolds and other hefty invite packages.

Write For DIY Bride!

Published by DIY Bride under Opportunties

Do all of your friends fawn over how clever and crafty you are? Is your finger on the pulse of the
wedding industry? Are you a slave to pop culture, DIY, and fashion/decorating? Come write for us!

DIYBride.Com is expanding our focus beyond wedding crafts (really, why limit ourselves?) and we’re
looking for bright, witty writers to help make us a more comprehensive, more hip, and more visible
resource for do-it-yourself brides (and grooms).

What you get: fame and I’d love to say fortune, but, alas, this is a free resource. There’s no cash
involved, but you do get your name in print and you’ll be part of a hip and rapidly growing bridal
community. Build your rep, promote your expertise and help thousands of DIYers create their awesome
celebration. (Plus, you’ll benefit from the mad publicity when my book drops in January 2008). We’ll
give you credit for your submissions, of course, plus create a fab little bio for you and a link to
your web page or business.

We need people who can write original tutorials, reviews, opinion pieces and more in the following
areas:

* Craft tutorials – Any wedding-ish craft is fair game.

* Trendspotting – What’s hip, hot, and happenin’ in the wedding industry?

* Pop Culture – Are you the Queen of Pop Culture? If you know who Perez is, subscribe to fashion
rags galore, and know every hip design blog we want you!

* Expose / Editorial – Have you experienced the deep, dark wedding underbelly? What lurks behind the
silk shantung curtain of the industry?

* Book Reviews – Help! I can’t keep up with all the fab craft & weddings books on the market. If you
have a weakness for books, tell us about the latest reads on your list.

* Reality Bites – There’s a huge disconnect between the WIC (Wedding Industrial Complex) and real world weddings.
What’s your take?

* Advice – Be part of our board of experts and answer burning queries about planning, etiquette, and
all-things-weddings. If you have a knack for giving sound advice without (much) snark, you may be
the one we’re looking for.

* Are we missing anything? Let us know!

The Deets:

* Articles can be any length and we’ll evaluate each one on a case-by-case basis. Ideally you’ll
submit 1,500 words or less (I know, I know – it’s hard to condense your brilliance). All articles
submitted will be edited for length, accuracy and clarity. Your article may be edited for other
reasons. If you want your article untouched then please note this in your submission. Please
understand that if your article is not accepted it could be for many reasons (standards, content,
grammar). Don’t take it personally. You’re still loved.

* You must be fun, fabulous, opinionated, and write well.

* Are you a feminist? We already love you.

* Submit articles in email or Word format only, please. Others formats will be rejected unless you
send them by carrier pigeon (because that’s just way cool).

* In addition to your article please include the following info:

1. Your Name
2. Story Title
3. Brief Summary Of Your Piece
4. Your Contact Info

* Terms & Conditions – Writers maintain their copyright of every article that they wish to submit to
DIYBride.com. Writers may re-publish electronically (on the web) provided that the re-published
article states: This article was first published on www.diybride.com.

Sewing Your Own Gown

Published by DIY Bride under DIY Projects & Tutorials

It’s no secret that sewing is my Sworn Mortal Enemy. Oh, I’ve tried learning. Even bought a machine. I can reattach buttons and mend the odd seam but, otherwise, sewing is just a skill that eludes me.

If you don’t share my fear of needle ‘n’ thread, I have some great resources for those of you considering sewing your own gown (and aren’t accomplished seamstresses).

* Sewing.Org – The official site of the Home Sewing Organization has some excellent tips and tricks for bridal sewing projects.

* A Vintage Wedding – Not only a neat little resource for researching vintage weddings, they offer a collection of vintage sewing patterns for sale.

* Fashion-era Forum – Another awesome vintage wedding resource, the Fashion Era forums offer a whole bulletin board topic dedicated to weddings. Lots of great projects and helpful peeps.

* SewBridal – A resource for that highlights tips and hints for creating your own gown from McCall’s sewing patterns.

Mini Sweater

Published by DIY Bride under DIY Projects & Tutorials

Did you know that some churches/houses of worship require brides to have covered shoulders/arms (in other words: no strapless gowns)? Maybe your church requires it or maybe it’s just your preference to be a little more covered than your gown allows. Perhaps, even, you’d just like a sweet little cover-up to keep warm. Whatever your situation, this adorable mini sweater (a.k.a. the boobholder) project from Glampyre Knits perfect. Imagine it done is a soft, fuzzy white knit (cashmere) or a sleek metallic. Chic!

This one’s for you, my crochet-savvy friends. Behold this lovely vintage gown created from crocheted organdy ribbon. If any of you endeavor to make this: please send pictures! I’m dying to see it (but am not crochet-friendly myself by any means, thus I won’t be making it).

Beaded Rose

Published by DIY Bride under DIY Projects & Tutorials

I love, love, love beaded flowers. They take a bit of patience to master but they’re worth it (if you like beaded projects).

BeadJewelryMaking has a nice tutorial for creating beaded roses. Wouldn’t these be lovely as boutonnieres? You could also create a whole bridal bouquet from them or sneak in a few into a fresh flower bouquet for added sparkle.

Seeds beads come in hundreds of colors so you’ll be able to make a pretty little flower to match your theme.

Petal Pin

Published by DIY Bride under DIY Projects & Tutorials

Using a petal ribbon and a pompom, this project creates a cute fabric flower. It’d be perfect as a corsage or to pin on a handbag, flowergirl’s basket, or even to the bride’s gown.
